In a post on Twitter yesterday ,the Cabinet Secretary for Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife Dr Alfred Mutua has assured the world that the nation remains open for business and ready to welcome tourists. Speaking to key figures in the tourism sector, the Cabinet Secretary emphasised the importance of this industry to Kenya’s economy and its youth.

“As the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, I want to reassure everyone that Kenya remains open for business and ready to welcome tourists, despite recent events,” stated Dr Alfred Mutua.

In his post, Dr Mutua elucidated that the tourism industry is a crucial component of Kenya’s economy, providing employment for 80% of the youth. According to him , last year, tourism contributed Ksh. 353 billion, and the ministry is ambitiously aiming to double this figure to Ksh. 700 billion annually in the coming years.

“Visitor numbers have risen from 1 million to 2 million by the end of 2023,” the Cabinet Secretary noted. “We project 3 million tourists by the end of 2024, targeting 5 million arrivals within the next 2 to 3 years. This growth means more revenue and job opportunities, especially for our vibrant youth.”the CS said.

The Cabinet Secretary credited President Dr. William Ruto’s proactive efforts, which have included vigorously marketing Kenya as a top tourism destination during his recent overseas travels, for this rise that was anticipated. The increase in tourist arrivals has also been significantly aided by the implementation of a visa-free policy.

“Our efforts and the recent initiatives by H.E. The President are paying off, and we are confident in our targets for the future,” the Cabinet Secretary concluded.
