The hopes of Tanzania reviving its tourism sector got a notch higher with Qatar airways resuming its flights to the country’s Capital. The airline will operate three times weekly to Dar es Salaam.

Tourism remains to be Tanzania’s leading foreign exchange earner and this is a good news for the sector. However, the government projects that the number of visitors will drop from 1,867,000 to 437,000 while revenues from the sector would also drop from an earlier projection of Sh2.7 trillion to Sh598 billion as a result of Covid-19.

Ethiopian Airlines was the first airline to land in Tanzania’s northern tourist city of Arusha through the Kilimanjaro International Airport on June 1, making it the first international carrier to land in Tanzania after it opened its skies for tourists.

Qatar Airline’s officials said that resumption of the Doha-based airline on June 16 will be the first direct passenger schedule flight from Hamad International Airport to Africa since the suspension of flights in March this year due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.
